The fortification was made in the year 1793, with the goal to control the ship-movements between the Volkerak and the Hollands Diep. France attacked The Austrian-Hollands in that year. As the outcome of a second battle near Neerwinden Holland stays under Austrian goverment. The Bataafse Republiek starts in 1795. Under the second govermental period of Thorbecke the fortification was made stronger in 1862. From the year 1874 the fortification is part of the Stelling van het Hollands Diep and the Volkerak. In 1915 the fortification was again upgraded, with weaponed concrete.
